Communist rebels tried to bomb a Voice of America transmitter north of Manila but were driven away in a shootout with police, an official said Thursday.

There was no report of casualties in the firefight Wednesday at the VOA compound in Concepcion, 60 miles northwest of Manila.Police Superintendent Eduardo Calderon said a security patrol spotted armed men near the compound and opened fire. The rebels withdrew into a sugar cane field after a 30-minute shootout, he said.
