Israeli gunboats and helicopters shelled a Palestinian refugee camp in the southern port of Tyre, killing five people and wounding 10 others, witnesses and Palestinian sources said.

Tuesday's attack came hours after Palestinian guerrillas fired Soviet-made Katyushets at Israeli targets and vowed it was the beginning of an escalation of their armed struggle against the Jewish state in support of Iraq.Palestinian sources said three Israeli gunboats, two miles away from the shore, and two "Cobra" helicopters shelled the refugee camp of Rashidiyeh on the outskirts of Tyre, 46 miles south of Beirut.
