Federal authorities here say that two men kidnapped an Amarillo, Texas, man earlier this month and taped him to a tree in Colorado before stealing his car.
Robert James Howard Jr., 20, was arrested without incident Monday by FBI agents in Layton, and a federal magistrate has ordered him held without bond pending a detention hearing on Wednesday.On Jan. 20, Steven Maness was arrested by the Las Cruces, N.M., Police Department and charged with possession of a motor vehicle and kidnapping. Howard was arrested in Layton, Utah, Monday without incident, authorities said.
Authorities said that two men abducted Darrin B. Stevens at an Amarillo truck stop on Jan. 13 and drove him to Douglas County, Colo. There, authorities said, Stevens freed himself, walked to a nearby farmhouse and contacted authorities.
After Howard made an initial appearance before Magistrate Ronald Boyce Monday, he was ordered held without bail until Wednesday's 2 p.m. detention hearing before Boyce.
"It's kind of a strange case," FBI agent Tim Screen said, after Monday's hearing. "It looks more or less like they were stealing his car, and they took him with them."
