Howard R. Gray, professor and chairman of the Department of Recreation Management and Youth Leadership at Brigham Young University, has been elected president of the American Association for Leisure and Recreation.

The 7,000-member group of educators from throughout the nation selected Gray, a Lehi native, to serve as their leader for a three-year term.Gray earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in recreation at BYU. He received his doctoral degree in recreation and gerontology from Pennsylvania State University.

Before joining the BYU faculty in 1979, Gray served as department chairman of Recreation and Leisure Services at Radford University in Virginia.

Some of Gray's awards include Outstanding Achievement Award (1990) and Meritorious Service Award (1986) from the American Association for Leisure and Recreation.

Gray serves on the National Council on Accreditation as a visitation team member for recreation, park resources and leisure services curricula in higher education. He also enjoys volunteer work with the Boy Scouts of America and the Orem Recreation Advisory Commission.

Gray, a resident of Orem, is married to the former Sharon Reed.
