A strong earthquake shook the Himalayan mountains early Sunday, killing more than 100 people in India and Nepal and injuring thousands more.

The Press Trust of India (PTI) reported 100 deaths in India's Bihar state, with another 1,000 people injured.From Kathmandu, PTI reported 35 more deaths and thousands of injuries in the mountain kingdom of Nepal.

Scientists in the United States said the quake measured 6.7 on the open-ended Richter Scale.

The Survey said this was the strongest earthquake in that part of the Himalayas since Jan. 15, 1934.
