The state Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing has suspended the license of a Salt Lake podiatrist accused of illegally dispensing drugs to patients and himself, an order said.

Donald S. Flandro dispensed Acetaminophen with codeine to nursing home patients between 1988 and 1990 without keeping any records of it as required by law, the order said. He is also accused of self-administering Flurazepam, a sedative used to treat insomnia, without a prescription from another physician. The order said Flandro was reprimanded two years earlier by state licensing regulators for self-prescribing medication.

"The serious nature of (Flandro's) misconduct, coupled with his apparent unfamiliarity with those statutes and rules which govern his licensure, requires an appropriately severe sanction," the state Podiatry Board said.

The licensing division approved the board's recommended order to suspend Flandro's license to practice for three months and his license to prescribe medication for six months. Following the suspension, Flandro's licenses would be placed on two year's probation, the order said.
