State licensing authorities have suspended the license of a Logan dentist whose drug-addiction problem poses a "significant" danger to the public.

The order of immediate suspension against Dr. Stuart D. Wilkinson was issued Jan. 18 and a hearing has been scheduled for Monday before the state dental licensing board to determine if Wilkinson's licenses to practice and prescribe medicine should be permanently revoked.A petition attached to the order said that on Jan. 9 Wilkinson, an oral surgeon, self-administered an anesthetic to satisfy his drug habit. After injecting the drug, the petition said, Wilkinson went into respiratory arrest requiring treatment by paramedics.

Following the overdose, Wilkinson reported his drug-addiction problem to officials at Logan Regional Medical Center, who then revoked his hospital privileges, the petition said.

Wilkinson, who is in a drug treatment program, told an investigator with the state Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing that his drug addiction developed last year from personal problems, the petition said.

Recognizing his drug problem, the petition said, he instructed his staff not to allow him access to the office drug stock. But "one day he found the drug cabinet key, accessed the drugs and commenced to again abuse them," the petition said.
