A vacationing Japanese woman strapped her 4-year-old son to her body and jumped from the seventh floor of a Waikiki hotel, killing both, but the woman's two older sons evaded a similar fate, police said Friday.

Mariko Komiya, 43, Osaka, secured her youngest boy to her body and tried to throw her other two boys off the balcony of their room at the Hilton Hawaiian Village hotel Thursday night, said police Lt. Gary Dias. Her 16-year-old son, who is mentally disabled, was able to fight off her efforts, Dias said.

Her 10-year-old son grabbed onto the bars of the balcony railing and was rescued by an unidentified California man after Komiya jumped to her death.

Police said Komiya and her husband were vacationing in the islands and quarreled about their plane tickets to return to Japan.
