Uintah Elementary School will have another stairway to its second story by mid-March.

The Salt Lake Board of Education has approved a $35,438 bid by Beck Street Construction to build the stairway addition to the school. The project must be completed by March 15 or the contractor has to pay a $100 a day penalty. The board decided to add the stairway after a fire marshal found that exits from the school's second story were inadequate during an emergency. Parents have complained to the board about the stairs and other safety issues.

The board is investigating whether it should remodel or reconstruct the old elementary school. The board will hold its Feb. 5 meeting at Uintah so members can discuss options with parents and personnel.
