Actor Robert Redford, likened in appearance to Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. Dan Quayle, R-Ind., issued a statement Friday saying any resemblance between the two men was only skin deep.

"This whole thing (comparing him and Quayle) sounds like quail droppings to me," Redford said through a New York spokesman. "I'd like people to know I'm voting for Michael Dukakis."

Quayle has often been compared in personal appearance to Redford, who played a young man running for the Senate in the motion picture "The Candidate."

Frank Pope, an Indianapolis lawyer and law school classmate of Quayle's, was quoted in The Washington Post Friday as saying the Indiana senator's political aspirations had been inspired in part by that movie.
