Larry Smith might be just filling in, but he's grabbing everything he can while he's there.
Larry Smith, starting at center for Houston in place of the injured Akeem Olajuwon, snagged 23 rebounds Thursday night and Otis Thorpe scored 23 points, leading the Rockets to a 118-94 rout of the Minnesota Timberwolves.Larry Smith has been relentless on the boards. He now has grabbed at least 20 rebounds in three of his last five games.
"I can't recall where I've played this well in this short a span," said Smith, who also scored 10 points. "They let me run around tonight. "
Kenny Smith scored 22 points, marking his fourth straight game with at least 20 points.
Vernon Maxwell and Buck Johnson each finished with 19 for the Rockets, who improved to 4-7 in games without Olajuwon. He suffered a fracture of the right orbit, which houses the eyeball, Jan. 4 against Chicago.
The Rockets ended a two-game losing streak and posted the second win in eight games.
Nuggets 120, Knicks 117
At Denver, Michael Adams scored 31 points including two free throws with six seconds left, ending the Knicks' three-game winning streak. Anthony Cook and Jerome Lane grabbed seven offensive rebounds apiece to help the Nuggets negate their 40 percent shooting from the floor. Patrick Ewing led New York with 30 points.
Spurs 111, Cavaliers 103
At San Antonio, Texas, David Robinson scored 30 points and the Spurs held Cleveland scoreless for almost two minutes down the stretch. The Cavaliers climbed to within a point with 2:30 left, but their next four possessions ended in Larry Nance committing an offensive foul, a Nance shot being blocked by Robinson, two missed free throws and a blocked shot by Willie Anderson.
Lakers 113, Charlotte 93
At Charlotte, N.C., James Worthy scored 17 of his 24 points in the first quarter, leading the Lakers to their ninth straight victory. Magic Johnson dished out 11 of his 17 assists in the first quarter. The Hornets never got closer than 14 points after the first 12 minutes. Kelly Tripucka led Charlotte with 23 points.
