Fathers, regardless of their age, should share the financial responsibility of pregnancy and child care, says Sen. Eldon Money, D-Spanish Fork.

Members of the Senate Human Services Committee apparently agreed, voting unanimously Thursday to approve SB51, which clarifies a man's responsibilities for his children and wife. The bill, sponsored by Money, was moved to the full Senate for further consideration. The one-sentence amendment reads: "Every father shall support his child; and every man shall support his wife when she is in need."

Sen. Boyd Storey, R-Eden, said the amendment is critical in light of the Senate bill approved Wednesday that would prohibit abortion on demand. If the bill becomes law, it may result in more births in Utah.

"In Social Services, we deal with the problems that are created and there's not nearly the kind of effort to preventing these problems in the first place," Storey said.
