Jerry G. Thorn, a former law professor at both Utah law schools, has been appointed deputy assistant secretary for labor-management standards in the U.S. Department of Labor.

Thorn will oversee the agency that administers the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosures Act, under Secretary of Labor Elizabeth Dole.Before joining the labor department in 1987, Thorn was with the law firm of Olsen, Thorn and Gill. A graduate of Brigham Young University and Duke University Law School, Thorn taught labor law at the University of Utah and BYU in the early 1980s.

Thorn spent 14 years as president of a group of construction and manufacturing firms and three years as an assistant general attorney for Southwestern Bell Telephone.

Prior to this appointment, Thorn served as deputy solicitor for national operations at the department of labor.
