A man was seriously injured Thursday when his car was struck by another car that was being chased by police.
Earl B. Stoops, 65, was driving his station wagon north on 900 West about 10:55 a.m. when the vehicle was struck in the 500 North intersection by a westbound car traveling at a high rate of speed.The westbound car, a Camaro, was spotted earlier by a Salt Lake police officer, who tried to stop the vehicle after noticing what appeared to be an underage driver. When the officer tried to stop the vehicle, which also contained two other male juveniles, it fled, reaching a speed of 65 mph at one point, said Lt. Ken Thirsk.
Following the collision, the youths tried to flee in the car, which was disabled and would only go in circles.
All three youths, two 14-year-olds and a 12-year-old, were taken to LDS Hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries. Stoops, who was ejected by the impact, was taken to LDS Hospital where he was listed in serious condition Friday.
Police discovered the Camaro had been stolen earlier from the parking lot of a business in the area of 1100 West and 3300 South.
