The Senate approved and sent to the White House legislation providing disabled veterans a 5.4 percent cost-of-living increase to meet a commitment to Americans wounded in past wars and those fighting in the Persian Gulf.

The Senate passed the bill 99-0 Thursday after House approval Wednesday.The legislation provides a 5.4 percent cost-of-living increase for the 2.1 million disabled veterans and survivors, retroactive to Jan. 1, at a cost of $412 million. The increased checks are expected to go out in April.
