Columbia Pictures has bought screen rights to produce a feature film based on the hit London stage play "Shadowlands."

The studio's announcement of the deal coincides with a recent ceremony at London's Savoy Theater, where the play received the prestigious 1990 Evening Standard Play of the Year Award.Playwright William Nicholson will adapt his work for the screen while the play's producer, Brian Eastman, will produce the film version, expected to begin production later this year.
