French fighter-bombers hit targets in Iraq during a raid Thursday, according to military sources, a first for Paris in the Persian Gulf war.

The assault was in Iraqi territory near the frontier with Kuwait, according to the sources, who did not reveal the nature of the target. A second, separate raid by French bombers hit an artillery site in southern Kuwait.All the French planes, presumed to be Jaguar fighter-bombers, returned safely to their base in Saudi Arabia, the sources reported.
