A 17-year-old Salt Lake girl is scheduled to be returned to Utah Sept. 15 to face a second-degree murder charge in the stabbing death last year of a woman at a party, authorities said Tuesday.
Pierce County authorities said Venus Ann Sherard is being held in the Pierce County Jail with bail set at $50,000.Sherard is wanted in the March 7, 1987, death of Ruby Kelly, according to Salt Lake police. They said the knife attack occurred after Kelly allegedly beat Sherard with her fists earlier in the evening.
Sherard, the youngest woman in Utah history to be certified to stand trial as an adult for murder, was arrested last Friday at 6:30 p.m. when Tacoma police Officer Joe Kirby spotted her walking away from a known "crack house," said police Sgt. Bill Parkhurst.
He said Sherard had been arrested July 15 on a cocaine-possession charge, but gave the alias Venus Cruz and was released before police discovered her identity.
