A Utahn who was arrested in June with several machine guns was diagnosed as schizophrenic while serving with the Navy in Vietnam, according to a court motion filed this week.
The document filed in U.S. District Court said Jorge Alejandro, 40, of Kaysville, has a history of mental-health problems.Michael G. Katz, federal public defender, made the disclosure in requesting continuance of an Aug. 29 pretrial hearing and a Sept. 12 trial.
Alejandro was stopped by state troopers near Limon when a traffic check showed license plates on the Volkswagen he was driving were listed to another vehicle. The VW was listed as stolen in California.
The defendant, indicted on federal firearms charges July 13, told a trooper that the machine guns were in the car.
