The Utah Army National Guard's largest call-up to date in the Persian Gulf conflict was announced Wednesday with 708 members of the 1457th Engineer Battalion being told to report Friday for duty.

Battalion members were notified of an alert status Tuesday, followed by the Wednesday announcement that they could be leaving the state as early as Sunday for Fort Lewis, Wash., said Guard spokesman Maj. Bob Nelson."Subsequent to that, they will deploy to Germany," Nelson said, although the call-up orders indicate the planned deployment locations may change due to "operational requirements."

The Guard has announced the call-up would be for as long as one year but would not speculate on the chances the battalion would subsequently be moved from Germany to the Persian Gulf.
