Quarterback Joe Montana underwent surgery to repair a bone in his right hand, broken during the San Francisco 49ers' loss to the New York Giants in Sunday's NFC championship game.

Two screws were inserted in Montana's hand during the surgery, successfully performed at Sequoia Hospital by team physician Dr. Michael Dillingham.Dillingham said Montana's hand will be in a cast for four weeks. The screws will be removed in two months and Montana will be able to begin throwing a month after that.
