Plans to close the 44-person Butte, Mont., FBI field office and consolidate it into the agency's Salt Lake division were still up in the air when Congress adjourned for its August recess.

Attorney General Edwin Meese III wrote Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, Thursday to notify him of the shift. Meese said the Montana operation "is neither efficient nor cost-effective."But Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., asked Sen. Fritz Hollings, D-S.C., chairman of the Senate Appropriations subcommittee that oversees the FBI, to block re-programming of bureau funds to make the change.
