Mr. and Mrs. Richard Chamberlain of Richfield are co-chairmen for this year's annual Sterling Scholars of Central Utah, and Gunnison Valley High is the first to announce its student selections for the honors.

The awards will be presented April 4 at 7 p.m. at Juab High School in Nephi. Efforts are being made to shorten the program this year, they said.More than 100 nominees from 11 south-central Utah high schools will be judged April 1 at Centerfield, Sanpete County. A dozen winners and 24 runners-up will be announced at the awards program. Winners will receive cash awards and some will get scholarships from 13 Utah colleges and universities.

Names, categories, photos, fees and three sets of photos must be submitted to committee chairmen before a coordinator's meeting at North Sevier High School in Salina Feb. 7. Entry forms and portfolios are due by March 22.

Named to the committee as representatives of the schools are Lorraine Wallace, Juab High; Lewis Monsen, Millard High in Fillmore; Briane Keen, Delta High; Gary Temple, North Sanpete High at Mt. Pleasant; Bert Christensen, Richfield High; Kevin Eppick, North Sevier High at Salina; Craig Mathie, South Sevier High at Monroe; Rodney Cox, Manti High; Larry Henrie, Gunnison Valley High; Lesley Treis, Wasatch Academy at Mt. Pleasant; and Lucy Ellett, Wayne High.

Mavanee Loftus of the Sevier School District is committee secretary.

Meanwhile, Gunnison High School is the first school to announce its Sterling Scholar nominees. They will compete with students from other schools in 10 out of the 12 categories. Nominees and their categories are as follows:

Muranda Edwards, English and literature, Centerfield; Richard Christensen, mathematics, Gunnison; Ruth Henrie, social science, Gunnison; Ramie Beck, science, Centerfield; Rebekah L. Bardon, foreign language, Gunnison.

Also, Jason E. Hansen, vocational education, Mayfield; Michelle Mellor, homemaking, Fayette; Kiersten Roberts, business education, Centerfield; Keith Holder, music, Centerfield; and Derek C. Anderson, general scholarship.
