Several legislative issues are pending in Congress that could affect reserve military troops on active duty in support of operations in the Persian Gulf, said Bob Lockwood, military aide to Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah:

- Measures to reduce the difference in civilian vs. military pay for doctors.- Special bonuses for medical reservists.

- Variable housing allowances to all families, not just those affected by activations of more than 180 days.

- A cash-out for leave unused at the end of an activation.

- An extension to the income tax filing deadline equal to the time spent on active duty plus 60 days.

- Expanded G.I. Bill benefits.

- Increased health and life insurance benefits, including an extension of health insurance coverage for several months after the active-duty period ends.

- An increase in the family separation allowance.

- An increase in the $3,000 death gratuity.

- Exemption from federal income taxes of all enlisted and basic pay.

- Adjustments in the Soldiers and Sailors Relief Act.

- Updates in re-employment rights.
