In order to have a natural gas system, Nephi must select a supplier of the fuel.
Nephi City Council members have agreed to have Scott Gutting, Energy Strategies Inc., evaluate proposals made by hopeful suppliers.Nephi, Mona and Levan will all hold general obligation bond elections Feb. 5 to determine whether residents of the communities want to bond to finance a project to bring natural gas to the cities.
Gutting was assigned, on recommendation of Golden Mangelson, project director, to evaluate the proposals and recommend a supplier. The council voted unanimously to have the evaluation made at a cost not to exceed $1,000.
Mangelson said the best route for the gas line would be from the north, following the old highway from Santaquin to Mona, to Nephi and across the ridge to Levan.
City Council members also agreed they would need attorneys with expertise in the field of gas utilities. The council voted unanimously to retain the firm of Wheatley and Randquist to be legal advisers.
Nephi hopes to have the municipally owned and operated system in place by July.
