A Provo man will undergo treatment at the Utah State Prison's diagnostic unit before receiving final sentencing on two counts of sodomy on a child, first-degree felonies.

Karl Carter, 56, pleaded guilty to the charges in December and was before 4th District Judge Boyd L. Park Friday to be sentenced. Carter's attorney, John Mussleman, requested that Carter be sent to the diagnostic unit to determine if a treatment program is available for him. He said Carter may be exempt from a minimum mandatory sentence because of the incest exception.Park said that Carter likely will be sent to prison under the minimum-mandatory guidelines but agreed to send him to the diagnostic unit for an evaluation. Carter faces a sentence of five, 10 or 15 years to life in prison.
