The Salt Lake Symphonic Choir is seeking an assistant conductor. This is a volunteer position, to serve with one of the city's finest choral organizations, and significant choral conducting experience is required.

The choir tours professionally two out of every three years, covering as much as 5,000 miles in the United States and Canada, often singing with prestigious orchestras and sponsorship. It also performs Christmas programs at the Cathedral of the Madeleine and elsewhere, and a spring concert.Interested persons should submit a resume, not to exceed two pages, directly to choir director George Welch, Salt Lake Symphonic Choir, Box 45, Salt Lake City, UT 84110. - NEW FORMS: REGIONAL INITIATIVE is offering several grants to artists in the six-state region of which Utah is a part, and is currently soliciting applications.

The grants, ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, will fund innovative and adventurous projects that explore new definitions of art forms and/or cultural traditions. To be awarded in 1991 is approximately $23,000, provided by the National Endowment for the Arts' Inter-Arts Program and the Rockefeller Foundation, with additional funding from the Apache Corporation.

Projects by one artist, or two or more collaborating artists, may involve one or more of the following disciplines: dance, music/sound, theater, visual arts, video/film, text, installations, environmental art and environmental performance works. Projects that deal with contemporary subject matter, experiment with a specific cultural tradition or that may not have access to other funding sources are encouraged.

- THE LOREN L. ZACHARY SOCIETY'S 19th annual national vocal competition for young opera singers will take place April 15-19, with finals to be held on June 2 in the Ambassador Auditorium, Pasadena, Calif. To be eligible, female singers must be between the ages of 21-33, and male entrants, 21-35. Finalists will compete for the top award, a round-trip flight to Europe for auditioning plus $3,500. Each finalists will receive a minimum of $1,000, with cash awards totaling $23,000.

The Zachary competition has assisted in placing 50 young singers on opera stages abroad and in America. Deadline for entering is April 1. For an application form, send a stamped self-addressed envelope to the Zachary Society, 2250 Gloaming Way, Beverly Hills, CA 90210.

- THE BOLSHOI BALLET ACADEMY of Vail, Colorado invites applications for its expanded program in 1991. Young dancers will attend six weeks of classes, July 7 through Aug 16, rather than the four weeks offered in last year's inaugural program. Teachers from the Bolshoi Academy of Moscow will be led by Sophia Golovkina, director of the Moscow Academy and artistic director of the Vail school. Approximately 25 Soviet students from the Moscow Academy will be in residence and perform during the last two weeks of the school. A teacher's academy will also be offered Aug. 18-21.
