As part of a realignment of management at the Deseret News, Chuck Gates has been named associate city editor/assignments editor, David Schneider has been named associate city editor and Mary Finch will become state editor.

Gates, 34, started writing for the Deseret News in 1981 as a reporter covering local government. He has served as assignments editor since May of 1990.Gates graduated from Brigham Young University. He has received first- and second-place awards in the Utah/Idaho/Spokane Associated Press writing contest.

Schneider, 31, has been with the Deseret News for nine years. He started as a reporter covering local government and then served 2 1/2 years as assistant state and city editor. He has served the past four years as state editor.

Schneider graduated from Brigham Young University in 1982. He has received first- and second-place awards from the Utah Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists for spot-news reporting.

Finch, 39, has been with the Deseret News since 1973. As a reporter, her assignments included the medical and religion beats. She has been assistant state editor and assistant city editor for the past two years. She graduated from the University of Utah in 1974.
