Military personnel from Davis County serving in the Desert Storm operation will get a break on unpaid or late property taxes for 1990, the county commission voted this week.

Commissioners approved a policy similar to the one passed Monday in Salt Lake County, abating interest and penalties on late or unpaid property taxes. Property taxes for 1990 were due at the end of November.County treasurer Michael Porter requested the policy for reservists called to active duty but the commission extended it to active duty military personnel sent to the Gulf region.

The outline of the policy was approved Wednesday, and a final draft will be presented for commission approval Monday.

Penalties for late payment of 1990 property taxes will be abated under the policy and interest on unpaid taxes will be charged at six percent, the minimum rate required by state statute, Porter said.
