The U.S. Postal Service reports that many letters going to or from military personnel in Saudi Arabia have the return addresses left off, sometimes at the request of military officials. But the Postal Service says the Department of Defense has instructed all personnel to include return addresses in all correspondence.
Mail service to and from Operation Desert Shield, now Operation Desert Storm, is taking about seven to 10 days. The Postal Service now has more than 150 domestic and foreign postal routing points serving the operation.The volume of mail going to the Middle East has been so great that it is being measured only by weight. As of Jan. 15, the Postal Service had processed more than 30 million pounds of mail for the operation. The volume is now averaging 305,000 pounds per day. Just before Christmas, the volume peaked at 525,000 pounds per day.
