Luther Ellis, an all-state football player from Mancos, Colo., made a verbal commitment early this week to attend the University of Utah next fall on a football scholarship.

Ellis, a 6-foot-4, 235-pound tight end, was a three-time Rocky Mountain News 2A all-state pick (2A is the second smallest of six competitive classifications). He will play for the South team in the Colorado all-star game in June, which selects its participants from all classifications.Ellis, who played offensive guard as a sophomore, caught 87 passes for 1,263 yards and 19 touchdowns during the last two seasons. He also played a different defensive position each season - end, tackle and linebacker.

"He narrowed his choices to three schools - Utah, Colorado State and Colorado - and chose Utah," said Ellis' coach, Kyle Graff. "He has great speed (4.8 in the 40-yard dash) for a big guy, and he's a good basketball player."

Ellis, an all-conference basketball player, is averaging 14.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game this year.

"He was impressed with the academics at Utah, and with the coaches, Ron McBride and Brad Childress," said Ellis' basketball coach, Gary Hill.
