The Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration has awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Charles F. Holbert, a University of Utah senior in metallurgical engineering.
Holbert's award was announced by J. Gerald Byrne, professor and department chair. Holbert placed second in the national competition. The scholarship was awarded on the basis of academic achievement and faculty recommendations.A graduate of Tooele High School, Holbert is vice president of the U. student chapter of The Metallurgical Society/American Society for Metals.
Kal V.S. Sastry, chairman of the Mineral and Metallurgical Processing Division, says Holbert's accomplishments will be reported in a future issue of Mining Engineering.
Holbert is employed by Newmont Metallurgical Services, a division of Newmont Mining Corp., which operates the nation's largest gold mine, in Carlin, Nev.
The Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration Inc., is a member society of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers.
