A Nephi man remains in the Juab County Jail after being found competent to stand trial on a charge of second-degree murder, a first-degree felony, in connection with the death of his girlfriend's 5-month-old son in October.
Jose Parra-Arredondo, 23, is charged with the Oct. 22 death of Arthur Beason. Parra-Arredondo allegedly physically abused the baby on the morning of Oct. 18 and then dropped him off at the place where the baby's mother, Maria Beason, 23, worked. The baby was taken to the Central Valley Medical Center in Nephi and later transferred to Primary Children's Hospital, where he died four days later.Charges were filed against Parra-Arredondo on Oct. 23 in 4th District Court in Nephi. A competency hearing was recently held and two doctors testified that Parra-Arredondo is competent to proceed. No trial date has been set but a court clerk said Parra-Arredondo's trial likely will be held in April or May.
