Three-year-old Dallas Olney has received a $500 scholarship from the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf. The award will help pay for speech therapy at Primary Children's Medical Center.
The award is given to children younger than 5 years with hearing loss who appear to have the ability to learn to speak. Dallas, son of Sandy and Randy Olney, West Valley City, is the first patient at Primary Children's to receive the award. The child was stricken with meningitis at 22 months, which left him with a profound hearing loss. He wears hearing aids in both ears.
"We will teach him to use his residual hearing and learn to attend to quiet sounds and visual cues," audiologist Terry Faust said. "Now's the time to find out whether he will be able to speak, while he's in the primary language learning years."
