Lawrence C. Poate died at his home, January 14, 1991, of cancer. His was a life dedicated to family, service and friendships.

Born September 5, 1919 to Margaret Mayberry and George E. Poate. Married Effie Gunderson June 19, 1942. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church since 1960, where he has served on the Board of Trustees and as an Elder. He recently supervised the building resoration project at First Church. He was employed by Utah Power and Light Company for 39 years, retiring in 1982 as Director of Public Services.He graduated from South High School, and attended the University of Utah. Served in the Utah National Guard and the US Army. He was a member of Acacia Lodge #17, Free and Accepted Masons; Scottish Rite; El Kalah Shrine Temple; Royal Order of Jesters; and Gyro International. He served on the Board of the American Red Cross. At time of death, he was chairman of the House Committee of the Masonic Temple Association, and a member of the Board of Directors of Sarah Daft. Larry received the Jaycee Distinguished Service Award as Salt Lake City's most Outstanding Young man of 1953. He will be sorely missed by his loving family, relatives, neighbors and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Effie; daughter, Rolayne and husband, Larry Fairclough, Salt Lake; son, George and wife, Shirley, Midvale; son, Chris and wife, Carole, Keewatin, Ontario, Canada; four grandchildren, Tanya Fairclough, Alicia, Danny and Chad Poate; brother, George A. Poate and wife, Alma, Los Angeles. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Arthur L. Fairclough.

The family expresses their thanks to their neighbor, Irmgard Sammann for the love and care she has given Larry during his illness.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, January 17, 1 p.m., First Presbyterian Church, 12 C Street, where family will meet friends one hour prior to services. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be sent to the charity of your choice. Funeral directors, Evans & Early.
