The Indonesian military Tuesday denied foreign reports that torture and mass killings had been used to bring rebellious provinces into line.

"I don't know why they are talking about thousands killed by ABRI (the army)," Teddy Rusdi, assistant to commander-in-chief for policy and planning, told foreign reporters.U.S.-based Asia Watch last month accused the government of massive human rights abuses in crushing a rebellion in the province of Aceh (pronounced Achay) in northern Sumatra.
