Track star Ben Johnson was charged with assault Monday after another athlete complained she was attacked last month at York University, police said.

Cheryl Thibedeau, a former teammate of Johnson's at the Mazda Optimist Track Club, filed a complaint following an incident last Dec. 17.Thibedeau complained to police about a dispute between her and a man at the university's track and field center. Insp. Stephen Harris said Johnson surrendered to police Monday morning and was released on his own recognizance.

Johnson is to appear in court Jan. 24.

Meanwhile, his coach says the sprinter is set to sparkle at the Los Angeles Sunkist Invitational track meet Friday.

Johnson placed a close second in an indoor meet in Hamilton, Ontario, last week. It was his first race since he was banned from the sport after testing positive for banned steriods at the Seoul Olympics in 1988.
