The family of an Air Force fighter pilot who died last week during a training mission in Saudi Arabia is setting up a scholarship fund in his honor, his father said.
"We're trying to generate funds to help young people carry on some of the things that Mike did and would have done had he lived longer," said Dale Chinburg, Capt. Michael Chinburg's father. The college scholarship fund at Oyster River High School in Durham would be awarded to a student with good grades, a dedication to family and country, and an interest in military flying, he said Monday.
Chinburg, 26, a member of the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing at Utah's Hill Air Force Base, died Jan. 8 when his F-16 crashed during a night mission. Relatives said that at the time he died, he was doing what he loved best, flying fast planes.
