Shed no tears over Utah's 1990 onion crop. The Utah Agricultural Statistics Service reported that Utah onion growers produced a record 912 million pounds of onions last year.

The crop was 8 percent greater than last year, also a record production year. Farmers planted 2,000 acres and harvested 1,900 acres, virtually the same as a year ago.Though they harvested a larger crop, it appears the 1990 onion crop will fetch a lower price than the previous year. The value of the 1990 crop was $6.2 million, compared with $6.3 million the previous year and $4.8 million in 1988.

The 1990 preliminary price estimate was $7.60 per hundredweight compared to $8.33 in 1989 and $8.26 in 1988.
