A Salt Lake man remained in critical but stable condition at University Hospital's Intermountain Burn Unit Sunday after apparently lighting himself on fire after a dispute over unemployment benefits.

According to a police report, 32-year-old Khamsay Vongsaath went to the Job Service center at 1234 S. Main and was talking to the operations manager about unemployment benefits he believed were owed him from several years ago. After reaching an impasse with the officer, the man calmly put his paperwork in a paper bag and then pulled a one-gallon plastic container out of a maroon carrying bag and poured the contents on himself and the top of the officer's desk, according to the report. The officer grabbed the container as the man lighted himself on fire and ran into another room. The Salt Lake fire department was called to extinguish the blaze, which critically injured the man and damaged the building.
