Children who have a penchant for theatrics will have an opportunity to express it in the after-school drama classes offered through the University of Utah's Division of Continuing Education starting Wednesday, Jan. 16.
Directed by Xan Johnson and his staff in the school's theater department, the classes will teach youngsters "what drama is all about" and, in the process, help them develop strong memories, expressive movement and communication skills, practical problem-solving abilities, active imaginations and heightened sensitivity. The program offers instruction at four different developmental levels. Students will be given tasks and activities specific to their needs at each level.
For example, first- and second-graders will focus on discovering their own personal resources, while seventh- and eighth-graders are encouraged to apply their own experiences with group dynamics and interpersonal conflicts to live theater.
All sections (Youth Education 70Y-1, -2, -3 and -4) meet on Wednesdays from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. in the West Institute Building at the corner of Third South and University streets. Tuition is $56.
