A malfunctioning valve at a North Salt Lake oil refinery sent a plume of flame about 200 feet in the air early Friday morning but did no damage, according to the South Davis Fire District.

Chief Brent Argyle said his crews responded to the Flying J Refinery on Center Street in North Salt Lake about 3 a.m. Friday but when they arrived, the problem had been handled by the refinery's firefighters."They had a malfunction, it dumped some extra product into their flare stack, and it apparently sent a jet of flame up about 200 feet," Argyle said. "It looked a lot more spectacular than it really was."

"They got some of the product that ran down the stack and onto the ground, but their crews handled it right away. There was nothing to see when we got there," the chief said.
