Our dear wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and sister, Leatrice Sproul Johnson, age 61, passed from us to her Heavenly Father early Thursday, January 10, 1991 at her home. She fought a valiant battle against cancer for the last two years.
She was born November 24, 1929 in Washington, Utah to John Denzil and Gwen Nisson Sproul. She married Sheldon B. Johnson April 2, 1949 in the St. George LDS Temple.A lifetime resident of the St. George area, Leatrice graduated from Dixie High School and Dixie College. As an active member of the LDS Church, she has served in many leadership positions including Relief Society president, Primary president, Spiritual Living instructor, teacher in the YWMIA, Cub Scout leader and Sunday School Nursery leader. She also sang in the ward choir. She loved boating and water skiing.
She was also active in community affairs serving as president of A.R.C. and a member of the Kiwanianns. She was a devoted leader for the mentally handicapped in Southern Utah. Because of her efforts, many lives have been enriched and developed to greater potential. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, always teaching by her example. Her love for life and for her family was immeasurable.
She is survived by her husband, Sheldon, St. George; her mother, Gwen S. Woodbury and step-father, Grant Woodbury, Hurricane; her son, Kerry and daughter-in-law, Barbara, Santa Clara; son, Layne, St. George; son, Kris and daughter-in-law, Robyn, Hesperia, Calif.; son, Brett and daughter-in-law, Brenda, Ogden; seven grandsons and five granddaughters; three brothers, Woodruf, Eddie and Willie Sproul, all Las Vegas, Nev.; and two sisters, Gwendolyn Gibson, Little Rock, Arkansas; and Jeannie Riech, Las Vegas, Nevada.
Funeral services will be held Monday, January 14, 1991, at 11 a.m., in the St. George LDS 3rd Ward Chapel, 200 West 500 North. Friends may call at Metcalf Mortuary, Sunday evening, January 13, 1991, from 7-8 p.m. and again on Monday, from 9-10:30 a.m. prior to services. Interment will be in the St. George City Cemetery under the direction of Metcalf Mortuary.
