It was just what a somewhat-struggling Granite prep basketball team needed - a 66-60 victory over third-ranked Jordan in Region 6 competition Friday night.
For Granite, the Farmers' home triumph snapped a two-loss skid. "We've always thought that we've been playing well, but we just haven't been getting the breaks," said Granite Coach Charlie Whiting, whose team had lost three of its first four league games by margins of two, seven and five points. For Jordan, the Beetdiggers dropped out of sole possession of first place in the region standings, having gone 4-0 in league play. Jordan drops to 5-6 overall; Granite improves to 6-5.
The 'Diggers jumped out to a 15-5 margin midway in the opening period by making seven of their first eight shots from the floor. Granite was mired with eight turnovers and trailed 18-11 at the end of the quarter.
In the second period, Granite threatened in the first three minutes to draw within 20-19, but Koy Lombardi scored seven consecutive points to put Jordan back on top at 27-19. However, Granite went on a 12-2 run just before half to take a 31-29 lead, thanks in part to Stuart Roberts' three FGs.
Back-to-back treys by Koy Lombardi and Mitch Berg snapped a 37-all tie late in the third and gave the 'Diggers a 43-37 lead. The Farmers countered with a combined seven points by Ezra Poon and Pat McGrath, but Ty Lombardi put Jordan back on top late with a buzzer-beating trey for a 46-44 lead going into the final period.
Jordan enjoyed its last lead at 51-48 on Ty Lombardi's pair of FTs with 4:46 to play, as the Beetdiggers connected on 5-of-7 FTs early. However, Jordan didn't score from the field during the first seven minutes of the period.
Granite went on another 12-2 spurt during the next three minutes, as Mike Hutchings scored seven points himself to give the Farmers a 60-53 lead with 1:07 to play.
Finally making shots from the floor again in the game's final minute, Jordan drew to within five and four points, but Granite was good on six of seven free throws to ice the contest.
McGrath finished with 20 points for Granite, while Hutchings had 15 and Roberts 10. Koy Lombardi led Jordan with 20 points himself, while Ty Lombardi contributed 15 and Berg 14.
