Disgraced sprinter Ben Johnson disappointed a partisan crowd with a second-place finish in his comeback race, a 50-meter sprint Friday night.

Daron Council, 26, from Alauchua County, Florida, put on a late charge to edge Johnson at the wire in Johnson's first race since serving his two-year suspension for drug use at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.Council posted a time of 5.75 seconds, just ahead of Johnson's 5.77 but well off the world record of 5.61 seconds. Mike Marsh of San Diego finished third in 5.79.

Johnson, 29, lacked his usual quick start, and appeared to stand almost upright out of the blocks. He surged to the lead by the halfway point but was caught by Council at the wire.

"I tried to focus on the race," Johnson said. "I got caught in the blocks."
