The Phoenix Roadrunners showed exactly why the Salt Lake Golden Eagles are looking over their shoulder these days.
The Roadrunners soundly beat the Eagles, 8-4, Thursday and in so doing moved from fourth to third in the International Hockey League, and to within eight points of the second-place Eagles, who dropped to a season mark of 22-18-3.Phoenix started quickly with a 2-0 lead after the first period. Both goals came on assists from former Eagle Rick Hayward.
Andrew McKim and C.J. Young combined for three Eagle goals in the second period, but Phoenix also left the period with three. In the final stanza, Phoenix hit three more before Marc Bureau scored the Eagles' final goal. The loss broke the Eagles' three-game win streak.
The Eagles traveled to San Diego today to play the Gulls at 8:30 p.m. (MST).
