One of six men charged with trying to rob an armored car has been identified as a high-ranking member of the Irish Republican Army, the Boston Herald reported Friday.

Michael Oliver McNaught, 45, an Irish national, was arrested Wednesday along with five others as they waited outside an Abington bank for the arrival of an armored car, federal and state authorities said. One of the other suspects had served time in jail for running guns to the IRA.The newspaper, quoting a source, said McNaught was the "highest-level IRA operative ever arrested" in the United States.
