Army officials report that more than 4,000 Utahns sent Christmas greetings to service members participating in Operation Desert Shield.

Two large cards were put on display where people could sign them at the Salt Palace. The cards were then forwarded to Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, Operation Desert Shield commander, by Lt. Col. Richard L. Rutledge, commander of the recruiting battalion at Fort Douglas.Schwarzkopf responded in a letter that said: "Thank you very much for the two gigantic Christmas cards. I have both of them on display at a large troop compound in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). They are wonderful reminders of the superb support that is alive and growing back in America."
