A Venezuelan navy plane slammed into a cloud-shrouded mountain near the Andean city of Merida, killing 22 servicemen, a military spokesman said Friday.

Navy Lt. Marino Boves was the only survivor of the crash, which occurred Thursday afternoon, civil defense officials said.Rescue brigades on the crash site reported by radio that they had found 12 bodies and that the remaining 10 were trapped in the wreckage, said Ivan Qunitero, a civil defense official in Merida.

The two-engine military craft was traveling from the Venezuelan capital of Caracas to Merida, about 312 miles to the west, he said.
