A 28-year-old Ephraim man was killed in a two-car accident at the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon early Tuesday morning.
Killed in the accident was:Steve P. Laing, 28, originally from Hudsen, Fla.
Laing was westbound on U.S. 89 at the mouth of the canyon around 7:10 a.m. when he lost control of his pickup truck on the icy road. The truck slid sideways into the eastbound traffic lane, where the passenger side of the truck was struck by a vehicle driven by John J. Ghirardelli, 33, Provo.
The gas tank on the truck burst into flames, according to Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Kenneth Colyar.
A passer-by was able to rescue Ghirardelli from his vehicle but was unable to help Laing.
Laing, who had recently been hired as a biologist by the State Division of Wildlife Resources, was pronounced dead at the scene. Ghirardelli, who was thrown through the windshield of his vehicle, was taken to Mountain View Hospital in Payson with trauma to his chest and extremities.
He was later transferred to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, where he is in critical condition.
